Summary:
The Danforth Plant Science Center Field Research Site at Fischer Farm (FRS) is located in St. Charles, Missouri approximately 19 miles northwest of the Danforth Center. Acquired in August 2022, the Field Research Site includes 140 acres of prime bottomland farmland, multiple large barns and storage buildings, a farmhouse, restrooms, and irrigation. The Danforth Center owns multiple tractors, planting equipment, and other farming implements necessary for efficient planting, weeding, and harvesting. Significant renovations are underway including new wells for irrigation, enhanced infrastructure to support seed preparation, sample processing, and storage, and additional equipment. Prior to acquiring the Field Research Site at Fischer Farms, the Danforth Center operated field research on leased land in the St. Louis area where scientists successfully grew a wide variety of crops including cassava, grapevines, intermediate wheatgrass, maize, sainfoin, sorghum, tef, tomatoes, and various cover crops. The Danforth Center employs a full-time Farm Manager/Field Research Coordinator an Assistant Farm Manager, and a farm technician, who manage research operations of the farm, perform maintenance and routine agriculture-related operations (field preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting, etc.).
