(Plantae) 2024 Black History Month: Black Plant Scientists Spotlight
Every February, Senior Research Scientist & Principal Investigator Kevin Cox Jr. puts together a list honoring one Black plant scientist for each day of Black History Month. This year, his list was published on Plantae, the American Society of Plant Biologists’ digital hub for plant scientists.
Throughout his career, Kevin noticed a lack of representation for Black plant scientists, especially at conferences or networking opportunities. When he would bring this concern to attention, he was often met with the response “Black plant scientists are difficult to find.”
“I personally disagreed with this notion,” Kevin says. “I also realized that in order to stop this common perception, it is important for the masses to know that there are plenty of Black plant scientists out there doing some amazing work.”
